Definately worth visiting and the museum here with it's Buddhist icons and other artifacts pushes this into the top rating.
Interestingly, this is where the famous Emerald Buddha, now displayed in Bangkok, was discovered here after a lighting struck the Pagoda (1434 AD) where it had been hidden. Hence, the Temple in Bangkok has the same name.
A replica of the original Emerald Budda is housed in one of the buildings here.
Nice shaped grounds for this Temple site.

Beautiful gardens meets the eye as one walks through the gate. The temple of interest further back and busy with devotees offering prayers. The temple is small and unusually also lit up with a green light (behind mosaic tiles) adding to the aura of mystery and reverence. Wat Phra Kaew offers two temples.. shrines and a museum all on the same ground.. and if that's not enough.. let's add a moat and a Chedi. Worthy of an afternoon visit and if the museum was open I could have spent even more time there.

Small temple complex but loaded with interesting artifacts and history. A must visit for anyone visiting Chiang Rai. Friendly monks too. Actually they were the only monks we saw all morning and we went to three other temples.

"Wat Phra Kaew" is a Royal Temple founded at least to the end of the 14th century. In 1434, the Emerald Buddha was discovered after lightning made a hugh damage to the chedi where the Buddha was kept. Now, the Emerald Buddha is enshrined in the ubosot of Wat Phra Kaew, Grand Palace, Bangkok. While, the ubosot of "Wat Phra Kaew - Chiang Rai" holds a copy of Phra Kaew Morakot image, which was made in honor of the 90th birthday of HRH Princess Srinagarindra, the Princess Mother of King Rama VIII and IX since 1991. Also, there is a Lanna style museum that displays artifacts from the Lanna period (1296 - 1558).

Open daily from 7 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Location: Trirat Road, Tambon Wiang, Amphur Muang, Chiang Rai.

Pretty crazy wat with so many different types of buildings thrown into the mix. The highlight is the fact that this is where the famed emerald Buddha used to reside and now there is a copy.
