This is currently 1 of the 6 restaurants in Bangkok which has 2 Michelin stars and 1 out of the 2 restaurants only serving Thai food. I have to say the presentation and the quality of the food is definitely there, am very impressed with the exceptional food I have tasted in R Haan. It was also an eye opener in terms of the theatrical experience.
The Amuse Bouche was interesting in terms of featuring food from different parts of Thailand in a map, and was very curious when I was made to choose 3 out of 6 items from the mains, which sounds very unusual from the other places for fine dining. There were a few items which I was caught off guard by the spiciness of the dish, but overall was enjoyable.
Some of the dishes were very memorable like the Crispy Rice Vermicelli, the Tom Yum Soup, Yellow Curry Grouper and the Sous-vide Duck.
As I mentioned to the staff, the way this dinner was presented was very special and it is very close to heart, as it feels like I am having a good Thai home cooked meal , and its also very unusual that you see rice in fine dining.
There is basically nothing much to fault on the dishes, except that the Bisque with Squid with the Parmesan Cheese Stick didn't go well with me. Didn't think the cheese could complement the dish, and the bisque was thick and the stick was thin it just broke the moment it was placed into the bisque. Probably I would have enjoyed it better with just sourdough.
What I thought was lacking was the customer service. There were a few things which didn't really live up to expectations, and the rating for this was more for the improvements to be made for the customer service than the food.
They changed the menu 1 day before I left for Bangkok, they told me they would send me the new menu but they didn't, and I had 2 days before visiting the restaurant.
I cannot believe I wasn't served the drink list until I asked for it. I had a bottle of still water, but then no one showed me the drink list, and I drank a lot faster because some of the dishes were spicy. So I realized I was almost finishing the water I requested for the drink list.
There were 1-2 dishes where the dish was served and the cutlery was not given for the meal, which I thought this was the staff being not attentive.
Thumbs up for the good food but a lot needs to be done for the training of the staff.
