Super cute. Delicious fish u0026 chips and their signature chocolate cake is not to be missed. They also have 12 rooms for rent. Would definitely consider staying here in the future.

Pretty great place! Not sure where everyone was when I walked in, but eventually someone came out to see what I wanted. I had already found my own seat by then. Took maybe 3-5 minutes... I ordered the Spaghetti and Meatballs. It was beautifully presented and the toast was perfect. The sauce had a robust flavor. The noodles were perfectly al dente. The meatballs fell a little bit short of what I hoped for. They were sort of dry but were the norm for flavor of meat in Thailand.
One thing to set your mind at ease. If you have travelled in Chiang Mai, you are warned not to get ice if it is not the tube shaped ice. They make their own ice on site, but it is filtered. So feel safe there. Now to what I was looking forward to the most. The legendary chocolate cake. It completely lived up to all the hype. It was fabulous. So rich and moist. I mean this was amazing cake! Definitely on the short list for a return trip with the wife!

Lanna- style ‘home’ in the old town, offers excellent western and Thai dishes and good value breakfasts.
Charcoa, which is a small guest house as well as an all- day restaurant, is located in the heart of the old city, across from the moat and about 1.5 kms from Thapae Gate. But if you assume that it is typical of many eateries in that area, catering for noisy farangs at rip off prices and with unprofessional service, you are in for a very pleasant surprise.
This place is an oasis of civilized eating in a charming Lanna-style country home. It offers some 25 plus seats in three sections, shielded from the soi by lush vegetation. But it is cosy not cramped, with decent sized tables, comfortable chairs and professional service. The menu is extensive in choice but has not made the mistake of so many eating places of offering an artificially wide variety of dishes. As one of my eating companions noted, there is something for everyone, ranging from inexpensive set breakfasts (around 100 baht up, plus smaller, cheaper options) to fillet pepper steak (399 baht), with plenty in between.
The service was surprisingly quick on a busy holiday lunchtime but I was warned that the appealing –sounding four cheese risotto would take at least 20 minutes. I decided to wait until an evening visit but was happy to think that it would be prepared properly, not something out of a microwave. The menu is a model of clarity, with attractive photographs and descriptions in Thai and English. It divides into sensible sections, with plenty of appetizers, including salads and soups, pasta dishes, Thai food, steak and duck, plus their specialty desserts and cakes (they also bake cakes to order).
Our meal included a spaghetti with meat balls- described as herby pork and delicious by the two carnivores, a generous Greek salad – one of four offered : Caesar, sirloin steak strips and tropical fruits, ranging around 150 baht. Also a club sandwich. Plus a marscapone cheese cake with a fruit coulis and a ‘home made’ vanilla ice cream which to be honest was very bland and certainly not made with vanilla pods.
A highlight of the meal was the drinks, including a ‘sparkling banana’ and a cherry based concoction with lime and soda: very refreshing. There were many more plus some fancy teas, house wine and other drinks. There is also a wine list but that will have to wait until a later visit.
Charcoa is well worth anyone’s time, thanks to its tranquil setting off the busy road and seems popular with Thais, local farangs and casual visitors. Prices are moderate, certainly there are cheaper places around but it has been my experience over many years that quality usually comes at a price. Here you CAN eat very reasonably, but given the casual elegance, the location, the pleasant ambiance and service and plentiful food, it seemed fair to me.

Best chocolate cake I've ever had and that's saying a lot since I am 68. Their Charcoa coffee is most excellent too.
