I have decided to bookend my island trip to Koh Chang from Australia with a night's stay in Bangkok. Not wanting to fuss with going to town and refusing to pay a premium staying in the hotel inside the airport, I researched for a nearby place to stay that is affordable, clean and safe, as I was travelling alone.
When I made my decision on iChapter, I am aware the hotel is not going to shower me with extravagance and opulence. I'm after value for money plus the features stated earlier: cleanliness and safety.
So when I arrived at the hotel and met the hotel manager Mr K, he explained to me, that due to COVID this hotel and their next door, slightly premium hotel, Atrium has been hard hit by COVID and it was once a 'check and go' restaurant when quarantine requirements for travellers entering Thailand was enforced.
Nonetheless, my night involved strolling along the main-street looking for a simple meal and a beer, and then I'm off to the island. I had a good shower, everything in the room works, has two large windows, the outlook is either greenery or river. The sheets and towels are clean, the tiled floor is swept. The next morning Mr K organised a taxi and I was on my way.
On my return I also spent my last night and the next day in Bangkok before catching the redeye back to Sydney. Mr K took me on a tour to the deserted sister hotel next door. I am surprised there's staff cleaning the lobby and outlets when there's not a single soul there. I looked at the pristine pool and sad to be reminded of the impact of COVID to the travel industry as a whole.
As a conclusion, I will say, COVID puts people out of whack and businesses in tatters. I hope Mr K and his hotels will thrive once again when travellers overcome their travel anxiety and get out. I also hope viewers appreciate the star system of hotels, when they say they are a certain star level, there is a certain upgrade or downgrade of amenities attached to it. So as their price points. For what I got, I paid 790B for the night and probably took more than that out of the attentive, friendly and no fuss service, which is only the real differentiator of one hotel to the next.
