Quite an expensive tour but worth seeing. We went on a tour from Chiang Mai, it was a very long drive but a lovely day out. The boat to Laos was definitely a highlight.

For 500 baht, you can leave your passport in Thailand and go for an hour to the Laos market. No customs required. The guide is really cool and gives a lot of information about the area on the way.

Great Anticipation, Mediocre Experience
The history and anticipation of the Golden Triangle was awesome - a lawless opium black market and intersection of three countries at a river crossing just sounds cool. However, the time we spent here was mediocre. Our highlight was trying the infused whiskeys made there (king cobra, gecko and opium). Worthwhile if it's part of a day-tour, but wouldn't travel that far north just to visit GT unless you enjoy gambling (casinos in Myanmar and Laos) or overpriced shopping.

Have been on tour twice from Chiang Mai,it is a very long day, but worthwhile in my opinion. Wat Rong Khun is fantastic, and on the last tour we also visited Baandam museum.
Seeing and travelling on the mighty Mekong is a must do,
even if perhaps the visit to Laos is not quite so exciting.
The tour guides are brilliant, and took very good care of the group on each occasion.
No evidence of the drug trade that the Golden Triangle was notorious for, but I did witness some smuggling at the Myanmar border town of Maesai..

Gripping tightly to the boat, we hopped in for the half an hour ride with sounds of the gushing water along the Mekong River where Thailand, Myanmar and Laos intercepts, the confluence of the Mekong and Ruak rivers and for the viewpoint set high on a hillside. The Golden Triangle, historically, used to be well known for opium trading but now, it lives on the cultivation of tourists, more so including the stop across to Laos-Burmese border and Don Island.

Very conveniently located right in the middle of town, near night markets and lots of food stalls. Walking distance to the clock tower.

Room is clean and comfortable. Air conditioner and ceiling fan work great.

They even serve instant coffee and delicious Thai snack in the morning.

Interesting Thai architecture and design, which is quite nice.
